Mechanisms of Internal Atlantic Multidecadal Variability in HadGEM3-GC3.1 at Two Different Resolutions

چکیده

Abstract This study broadly characterizes and compares the key processes governing internal Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) in two resolutions of HadGEM3-GC3.1: N216ORCA025, corresponding to ∼60 km atmosphere 0.25° ocean, N96ORCA1 (∼135 1° ocean). Both models simulate AMV with a time scale 60–80 years, which is related low-frequency ocean circulation changes. In both models, heat transport convergence dominates polar subpolar AMV, whereas surface fluxes associated cloud changes drive subtropical AMV. However, details differ between models. N216 subsurface density anomalies propagate into subtropics along western boundary, consistent more coherent widespread development SST anomalies. contrast, N96 persist latitudes for longer, so are centered there. The drivers also N216, NAO dominant driver, while upper-ocean salinity-controlled that originate from Arctic appear be driver N96. These results further highlight mechanisms model dependent motivate work better understand constrain differences.

Predictability of North Atlantic Multidecadal Climate Variability

Atmospheric weather systems become unpredictable beyond a few weeks, but climate variations can be predictable over much longer periods because of the coupling of the ocean and atmosphere. With the use of a global coupled ocean-atmosphere model, it is shown that the North Atlantic may have climatic predictability on the order of a decade or longer. These results suggest that variations of the d...

A predictability study of simulated North Atlantic multidecadal variability

The North Atlantic is one of the few places on the globe where the atmosphere is linked to the deep ocean through air—sea interaction. While the internal variability of the atmosphere by itself is only predictable over a period of one to two weeks, climate variations are potentially predictable for much longer periods of months or even years because of coupling with the ocean. This work present...

Low-Pass Filtering, Heat Flux, and Atlantic Multidecadal Variability

In this model study the authors explore the possibility that the internal component of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) sea surface temperature (SST) signal is indistinguishable from the response to white noise forcing from the atmosphere and ocean. Here, complex models are compared without externally varying forcing with a one-dimensional noise-drivenmodel for SST. General analytic ...

On Multidecadal and Quasi-Decadal North Atlantic Variability

Observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the North Atlantic from 1958 through 2000, as well as data from an ocean model simulation driven with the atmospheric variability observed during the same period, are examined using multichannel singular spectrum analysis. The two leading oscillatory modes are associated with a multidecadal and a quasi-decadal period. The former is connected to a basi...
